A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the speed and execution of the country's major infrastructure initiatives.
The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a relatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The building of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national works. They were built at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked ongoing questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier accident this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-deadly derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been running in total adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and management of these vital initiatives.
