Individuals Coming Off Anti-Obesity Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a leading medical journal points out that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such treatments should be cognizant of the risk of rapid weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of the injectable medications with older methods.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the injections explains the amplified regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts argue that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the chronic character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Use

Recent estimates indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest continuing to grow.

  • Use is higher among women compared to men.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, clinicians caution that while these medications are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
