Larian Studios Announce a Fresh Divinity, Labeling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Ever

The anticipation around the recent awards show was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic photo of a strange statue. The mystery has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a third Original Sin game to its venerated RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing suggests that the team could be crafting a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and it's fair to claim it sparked the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—elements that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust given to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible with a distinct build with a personal story.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to improvise throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a clever way.

The Journey Continues

It is these creative systems that lead fans and critics to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for another adventure in this groundbreaking franchise.
